Pokemon Symphonic Evolutions

November 21st, 2015

When I was a kid, my parents used to take me to watch theatre plays, operas and of course symphonic orchestra performances. I’ve heard my fair share of Bethoven, Mozart, Bach, Tchaikovsky. And during my high school days, I also played a fair share of their pieces as well, while being part of the school orchestra.

But ever since I came to Australia, I haven’t had the chance to go to anything of the sort. And the only time I’ve been inside the opera house, was when I went to watch a rock concert by Tenacious D.

This November, the Sydney Symphonic Orchestra is preforming a rather unusual set of songs. They can not be defined as classical music and they were not even originally written for an orchestra. These pieces are the OST (Original Sound Track) for the Pokemon games! The concert is called Pokemon Symphonic Evolutions and the orchestra performed a variety of soundtracks from all Pokemon generations 1-6. It was truly a beautiful experience to hear soundtracks that defined your childhood performed as a symphony.

Twitch Plays Pokemon

Twitch Plays Pokemon

If you don’t know what this is, I think it is time to climb from under the rock you have been hiding for the past 2 weeks and start watching & participating! This is not just Pokemon, oh no, this is much more. As Wikipedia put it, Twitch Plays Pokemon (TPP) is a social experiment, I’d say it has become a social phenomenon. Basically what TPP is, it is a stream of a Pokemon Blue game modified to accept the commands typed into the chat of the stream by the people who are watching, thus making them the players. As this idea is new and original, the concept became super popular and thus amassed over 70,000 people to play at a time (though it has died down and only 30,000 are playing at the moment, but still!).

Weekend with Drawing Circle

DC_Goya

As you know I am the screenings director for Anime@UTS and an active member of JASS, but as of last year I also joined a newly formed club called: the Drawing Circle. As the name implies its a club of artistic people who love to draw, sketch, design and just make pretty things. Well I have quite a few friends there and so I decided to join as well, cause why not, however I haven’t really gone to any events, aside from the joint Pokemon event with the anime club. So now that I am dating a girl who is pretty much an exec of that club (not really but kinda), I though it would be nice to come to their events as well.

It has been 16 years since the first Pokemon game came out in Japan in 1996, wow thats a long lifespan for a game! While some might say that the hype has died down over the course of time, other still believe that Pokemon is as popular as ever especially with the release of X&Y last Saturday which brings gamers the 6th generation and into a completely new region: Kalos and around 60 new cute little critters to catch.

Pokemon on my Mac

June 17th, 2012

pokemon screen

Because of all this talk about Pokemon in the Anime@UTS club lately, I fell into nostalgia mode and decided to replay some of the classics.

In order to do that though, one either need a Game Boy / Color / Advanced / Nintendo DS.  In my case I have a Game Boy Advanced, however i do not posses any of the Pokemon games…. sadface.jpg

So what does an IT guy do in this case, one thing! find an emulator. And I was successful. Now I can play any Game Boy games on my iTaiga (MacBook Air) or iKonata (Mac Mini). 1 ROM is usually 1-20MB and they provide infinite enjoyment!
